Launch of the Inclusive Culture Lab

Under the patronage of the Canadian Commission for UNESCO, the Inclusive Culture Lab combines participative research, research creation, and research action to promote accessibility to the cultural environments of these institutions, by identifying best practices that lead to inclusion.

Exeko

For ten years, Exeko has positioned itself in Montreal’s cultural life by putting issues of social inclusion and accessibility to culture and knowledge at the forefront of their mandate, by challenging the development of hierarchical knowledge systems, and by affirming that knowledge is co-created by all citizens. As an organization for social innovation based in Montreal since 2006, Exeko uses creativity—art and philosophy—to promote the social inclusion of people experiencing or at risk of social exclusion. Its approach is to recognize the potential in everyone to think, analyze, act, create, and fully participate in society, regardless of their status or the path their life has taken. Equality of intelligence is the principle at the heart of Exeko’s action.

Groupe des onze comprises eleven participating cultural institutions, hence its name. These institutions are : Bibliothèque et Archives nationales du Québec; Les Grands Ballets Canadiens de Montréal; Maison Théâtre; Musée des beaux-arts de Montréal; Opéra de Montréal; Orchestre Métropolitain; Orchestre symphonique de Montréal; Salle Bourgie; Société de la Place des Arts; Théâtre du Nouveau Monde; and TOHU. The group promotes cultural democracy based on the philosophy of inclusion, on common values, and on an egalitarian dialogue between Montreal’s cultural actors and their publics. It encourages the emergence of new practices linked to the concept of culture at the service of the community. The Inclusive Culture Lab’s position is the embodiment of these institutions’ will to challenge factors that impede access to culture, by opening doors to their programmes and by actively collaborating in associated research for the duration of the three-year project.
